July 10, 2009:
Current events: My least favorite focus.
All Americans seem to be doing very well handling our first African-American
President. We should be proud. It has been a peaceful transfer of powers. We
are a nation of immigrants and the world's experts when it comes to dealing with
diversity. Yes, America has its difficulties when it comes to issues regarding race
and ethnicity but I think most of the time the problems we have regarding diversity
are problems we choose not to solve rather than problems we can not solve!
Again: we are the world's experts.
Question for today in today's changing political and economic environment is:
What is the difference between
change
and
a token? Like those formerly used on the various transit systems?
As Americans, do we really need to prove anything about our ability to be diverse
except maybe electing Obama to a second term if he does a good job?
No, I am NOT endorsing him (or not NOT endorsing him) but a second term
seems to be the least controversial way to prove that we have changed and we
have not adopted a policy of "tokenism" as we have in the past.
Of course, I guess some people could say we could also just elect another
African-American President, too.
(Sigh) Like I said: Politics and current events: my least favorite subject. So,
please, don't make the mistake of knocking at MY door for some opinions about
political matters.
Actually, the statement SHOULD be that we Americans should now be more able
to elect a QUALIFIED person to the office of the President REGARDLESS of their
race. Or gender.
