August 9, 2009 at 4xxpm:
For many adults, this is the start of a new school year for their children.
Good luck!
I know that with the "No Child Left Behind" and etc, the educational system should be
improved.
Sorry to be a pessimist but I think a lot of children have been left behind.
Everyone wants to blame SOMEONE for the problem, too. I find that interesting.
Despite those children who have a stellar performance in the educational system,
trust me on this: There are PLENTY of problems in the American educational system
and there are NO easy answers.
I know this for a fact. But many people just do not care! They are just so happy to
get OUT of it as SOON as possible with little fuss as possible. I think some of those
problems are starting to creep into the post secondary system, too.
You would not know it but my child entered the educational system ahead of the
curve. He had only spent a few weeks in daycare as an infant. So he learned how to
read and write just by listening to me teach my daughter who was having problems. (I
"didn't have time to teach him". A shame, huh?) He wouldn't know he was the same
person now. Why? And guess who repeatedly gets blamed for that? Especially by
those with NONE of the pertinent facts?
I have had some extremely severe problems with the system and not for lack of effort
on my part.
Although I don't want to get into the "wise Latina" debate and all its ramifications, I will
add that some of those problems with the educational system did get a bit better
when a personal friend of mine (one I used to babysit) became of President of the
School Board. Not that I involved my child and his problems in a political debate even
with personal friends but the system did become a bit easier to manage. Before that
occurrence, the system was absolutely intolerable!
However, there are two subjects that I have not planned to discuss in great detail on
this website:
Economics
and
Education
It would take an "encyclopedia" of links and etc. I have been working on some of
these problems for years and I don't see many of them getting any better. So that is
why I chose not to write about those subjects, specifically education, here. There are
just too many inconsistencies in the system.
I have also noticed what appears to be some acts of intimidation by some forces
periodically also. Is it because the children are "captive" and some think they have
the power to silence desent? Or is it someone vying to get all those potential
educational dollars? I don't know and I don't care because I have also said that those
who would use children for any reason are at the bottom of the barrel when it comes
to having some real power. People with real power "play" with adults! Therefore, not
a REAL threat that can not be easily resolved.
Some may say, "Aren't the children worth the effort?"
I would say that "Children, have many other problems we can discuss that may help
them. Those skills will then help them maneuver any kind of system. Let the policy
makers, not necessarily just the educators, deal with the educational system."
Good luck. Be strong and courageous! Sometimes you need to be.
Note: I am also reminded that I had promised to provide solutions and not just
spotlight problems. I will try to do that or else not write at all.
Solution for this problem: Let the policy makers work on the problems in the
established institutions and/or provide trusted alternative solutions for our children
which are truly competitive educationally and economically with current ones. Our
children need that action from us on their behalf because they can not provide it for
themselves.
How about providing a FREE education for those who are earnest about an
education for as long as a person wants to be educated? Aren't our children worth
the investment? Or are we determined to have a "uneducated" and "lazy" workforce
so there will be a justified reason to send even more jobs overseas? Sometimes I
can't but help that is real reason for many of these problems. Consider the
economic implications. Also consider the prospects of living in a two class society,
too. The economic implications of "uneducated" workforce in a society with a high
standard of living is a subject I can write about and I believe in a free global market.
However, why can't more of the market be here where consumerism and production
go hand in hand?
I just don't understand why a truly free education is not an option in this country. I
know that scholarships are available to "qualified" applicants. However, sometimes
those who need the help the most are the ones who qualify the less. Some may say
that we are working on health care reform now. "Just HOW much money do you think
we have?!" Yes, funding health care is a huge problem and is only going to get
worse. However, are the problems in health care bigger than the ones in the
educational system? Some would say, "YES!" and place the blame in the education
system everywhere but where it should be. My answer would be "NO! The problems,
in my "uneducated" eyes, seems to be worse in the educational system.
Furthermore, I don't know how we are going to have some real health care reform
when the educational system is in a shambles. AND when the government may offer
to pay pennies on the dollar for medical service when doctors may have hundreds of
thousands of dollars in EDUCATIONAL debt and in expectation of a higher standard
of living. Please: prove it to me but I don't see REAL REFORM happening!
Frankly, if you ask me: I think, despite the Hippocratic oath, some of them may
secretly wish that such reformers die in the ER first. That is why I want to be there:
TO SAVE YOUR LIFE! (smile) Yeah, they may save your life, but, grudgingly. (smile)
It's that oath and all. They may succeed in following the LETTER of the law but FAIL
at following the SPIRIT of the law. (smile)
NO child left behind.
Yeah, right.
Trust me: you do not want me to write about that subject here. However, if I even
attempt to write about economic implication of a uneducated/untrained workforce it
will be on the Labor Issues page right where it needs to be.
An untrained workforce always dealing with a lot of drama in any form because it is
the "in" thing and a distraction from the REAL issues, will soon be a non-existent
workforce. Then guess who is next to go? Of course, all the "character actors". Who
need character actors without an audience? Anyone who doesn't know that is
.........a.....sorry.....fool. And, also "uneducated". (smile) Because why would MOST
people take a little when they can take it all? Hasn't that been the trend lately?
