Okay. I admit it. Our last trip produced mixed success. "Why Mars?" Well, I had to start
somewhere. Some may suggest I should start closer to home. Well, obviously I would have to
start at home because to get to point B, one must start at point A.
Before I continue I must mention a subject that I have not mentioned much on this site except
as it pertains to myself: economic concerns.
I want to remain sensitive that many in the world today are affected by the global financial
crisis. I hope my travel tips will reflect this sensitivity and not just be a page for "pure
escapism" (the other perspective I promised) and a return to irresponsible consumerism. I am
not forgetting the Christian perspective. However, wise people will want to get the best value
for their money even as they engage in the escapism most reflected in the hobby of
travelling. (smile)
Therefore, being sensitive to those economic concerns, I want to mention great travel
destination in addition to other concerns that affect travel, such as technological news.
However, I hope to inspire others to consider visiting similar locations closer to home if they
are unable to travel to the destination mentioned.
That said, my next destination will be the pyramids of Egypt!
Contact various trusted travel agencies for details. However sites with a virtual tour and a
reconstruction are available.
I can hear the moans now. "Egypt!?"
And
"More Africa stuff? We like the water better!"
Listen up: If I mention "Africa stuff", it is because you need to hear about "Africa stuff"!
You need to get in touch with your "darker" self. (smile) Deal with it. We may have to deal
with that subject in "Basic Scientific Facts".
Back to the pyramids.
You may ask "how in the world am I going to find a pyramid near my home?"
Well, the pyramids are nothing but big buildings with bones in them.
Don't you have them near your house?
They are called memorials!
We have a few in the United States such as:
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial
Another site: a reference site about the Vietnam Veterans Memorial with ads!
A site at the National Park Service regarding the Veterans
The Lincoln Memorials
The various Civil War sites
And even personal family memorials
Regarding memorials depicting other incidents which occurred around the world, we have:
The World War II memorials (which will direct you to other resources)
The Holocaust memorial. This link also mentions other acts of genocide.
Various memorials for various leaders, whether they were good or bad
Various religious shrines
(I would add more links but my computer is resisting the effort right now)
Okay. I know one famous travel Memorial Day destination is not so morbid.
And we may address that destination in detail year: The car races at the Indianapolis 500 in
Indianapolis, Indiana. However, even when we think about those car races and the great
technological innovations they inspire in the world of travel, we are reminded of memorials.
As we pay our respects at the memorials of our respective fallen heroes, we should reflect on
our own lives. Will our life be synonymous with those cars going around and around and
around the tracks at faster and faster rates of speed continuously reliving the past?
Will we live at those memorials;
live in the past;
like some night stalking, blood thirsty vampire sucking the life out of everything around us?
Or will we learn from those memorials;
learn from the past,
determined not to repeat the same mistakes some of which those at the memorials would
testify?
As we pay our respects at the various memorials around the world, we should stop and
engage in some deep reflection.
Look at the names on those memorials from the various walks of life.
Does your own life reflect the values and the sacrifices for which they died?
I guess the final question to ask is this:
Will you be visiting a memorial
or
will you
just
be visiting
a
tombstone?
You decide.
If you can't decide,
maybe you should consider visiting
one the greatest memorial of all:
the cross.
Just a suggestion, though. This IS a travel page after all. (smile)
